At the 2018 Design Symposium, some of the most creative architects, landscape architects, planners and design professionals in Hawaii and throughout the Northwest and Pacific Region will explore the theme: Building Voices: Livable Cities & Communities.  They will share with us how they Build the Voice of the Design Industry, through our primary symposium tracks:  Design in Coastal and Extreme Climatic Conditions, Healthy Citizens & Communities, Community Mobility & Housing for All.  Attendees will also meet and learn from industry product experts at the more than 200 Exhibitor Booths during the 19th Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo, presented by HonBlue.

AIA Northwest & Pacific Leadership Summit & Annual Meeting

The Leadership Summit registration fee of $95 includes continental breakfast, lunch and reception. Thank you to AIA Honolulu and AIA Hawaii State Council for hosting the Leadership Summit.

18th Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo

A main component of the 2018 Design Symposium, the Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo is the go-to event of the year for Hawaii’s building industry, coming to the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Wednesday, November 14.

Presented by Honblue and produced by the Honolulu chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Honolulu) and the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), the all-day Expo features a showcase of products and services from more than 300 vendors.

For 19 years, the Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo has been Hawaii’s leading building industry trade show.  While exploring the symposium theme of Building Voices:  Livable Cities and Communities, the 19th Annual Pacific Building Trade Expo will offers exhibitors an excellent opportunity to reach more than 1,500 architects, contractors, engineers, developers, interior designers, specifiers, building managers, and military and government officials.

On Wednesday, Symposium attendees will hear from Ed Mazria, FAIA, while enjoying a box lunch, courtesy of our lunch sponsor.  Edward Mazria is an internationally recognized architect, author, researcher, and educator. Over the past decade, his seminal research into the sustainability, resilience, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions of the built environment has redefined the role of architecture, planning, design, and building, in reshaping our world. He is the founder of Architecture 2030, a think tank developing real-world solutions for 21st century problems, and host of the AIA+2030 Professional Education Series and 2030 Districts movement in North American cities.

The Emerging Professionals Party will be held on the evening of Wednesday, November 14 at a fantastic location in Honolulu!  The party is open to all AIA Honolulu Associate and Young Architects Forum members, non-member emerging architects, young members of local, design-oriented organizations, Northwest & Pacific Region members, students, and all “young at heart” AIA members. The goal of the party is to promote camaraderie between all emerging design industry professionals and to provide an opportunity during the Design Symposium for Emerging Professionals to show the greater design community their strength.  The evening will include food, drinks, music and more!

Join us for our Thursday Breakfast Keynote!

Our Thursday Keynote  will be a memorable, provocative, and inspiring speaker relevant to the theme Building Voices: Livable Cities and Communities. The Thursday Keynote will be  structured around a sit-down breakfast, and all Symposium attendees are invited to attend.

The Symposium Education Workshops will offer attendees an opportunity to take a deeper dive into select topics that were presented on Wednesday.

The AIA Honolulu’s Annual Design Awards is Hawaii’s oldest program of its type, held annually since 1958 is now celebrating 60 years!  It provides an avenue for member architects to be recognized by their peers for their effort and dedication to excellence in architecture. The competition culminates in a gala awards celebration to recognize the winners and all of our distinguished entrants, attracting more than 300 members and affiliates.
